Gov. LRay leads groundbreaking of rebel returnee community
Another first for CamSur
PILI, CamSur - A new dawn opens to rebels, and their families, who have returned and want to pursue a normal and peaceful life in a community.
The provincial government along with partners Gawad Kalinga and the assistance of the Philippine Army launched last Tuesday at barangay San Jose here another innovative undertaking called Community of Hope which will provide rebel returnees homes and opportunities for livelihood activities.
The Community of Hope program with rebel returnees as beneficiaries is a milestone in the continuing collaborative partnership between the province and Gawad Kalinga and the first such housing project throughout the country.
In an emotion-laden ceremony held at a sprawling lot at barangay San Jose where the first housing project for rebel returnees under the Community of Hope program is located, Governor LRay Villafuerte assured them the assistance of the provincial government for the immediate construction of their housing units on the site.
Aside from the housing project, the Community of Hope program will be complemented by livelihood opportunity projects so that the rebel returnees and their families will not be left idle and hungry.
The occasion was highlighted by the ceremonial surrender of firearms by rebel returnee commander, “Ka Marjorie”, afterwhich Governor Villafuerte hugged the commander like a long lost brother.
GK founder Bro. Tony Meloto, who was on hand to welcome the rebel returnees, described the location where the rebel returnee community will be built as a field of dreams and a field of hope. He also preached the message of unity and peace where there is no discrimination between the rich and the poor and the need for waging war.
Commanding officer Maj. Gen. Ruperto Pabustan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, PA said that the momentous occasion jibes with President Benigno Aquino’s program of Convergence and Winning Peace.
Instead of firearms, the general said he will be bringing to the site construction tools to assist in the building of the community.
Msgr. Zosimo Sañado was also present during the occasion for the invocation.
After the program proper, the ground-breaking ceremony ensued spearheaded by Gov. Villafuerte along with Gen. Pabustan, Bro. Meloto and Msgr. Sañado. snieves/mmec
