CamSur vegetable production project opens opportunities for farmers
PILI, CamSur – With the El Niño phenomenon now plaguing at least 14 provinces of the country, the Vegetable Production project of the provincial government which aims to make the province self- sufficient in high quality vegetables has indeed become more relevant.
In barangay Tinangis, Pili, some 50 enthusiastic residents are now being taught through lectures on various stages of vegetable production including pest and disease prevention and control management and other technologies that would immensely contribute to a much efficient and improved growth of vegetable crops.
The project is along the thrust of Governor LRay Villafuerte for the province to attain food security and to provide the constituents an alternative or supplemental income.
What was remarkable about the project was the focus on technology application through a combination of lectures and actual field demonstration conducted at the experimental site on what have been previously discussed in the classroom.
Some agricultural experts are optimistic that the drought that has occurred in some provinces of the country may not adversely affect CamSur. Hence, this will be a boon for the province’s vegetable growers.
The Vegetable Production Project in barangay Tinangis is now on its sixth of its eight sessions. In the previous fifth session, the participants were trained on how to transplant vegetables grown in seed beds to much wider plots.
The activity was spearheaded by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) of the provincial government in partnership with the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Unit 5 (DA-RFU 5), and Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).
The resource speakers were the Training Management Team of the High Value Commercial Crops (HVCC) from OPA.
Some of the vegetables planted during the whole period of training were tomato, lettuce, pechay, cucumber, and watermelon. / LAGavino/STN - MMEC
