CamSur triathletes shine at Matabungkay triathlon
1st Tri King Long Distance Triathlon
PILI, CamSur – Unfazed by a daunting field of over 200 veteran multi-sports athletes from all over the country and other nations, members of the burgeoning CamSur Tri Team organized and fielded by Gov. LRay Villafuerte proved their true grit, speed and endurance with a world-class performance at the 1st Tri King Long Distance Triathlon held at Matabungkay Beach Resort in Lian, Batangas Sunday, July 25.
Benjamin Raña, Jr. and Philip Atento led the five-man team’s penetration campaign into the international multi-sport circles with first place finishes in the 18 to 29 years and 30-39 years categories, respectively.
Teammates Mark Anthony Hosana also captured second slot with Cris Dimaano close behind at third in the 18-29 group, giving the CamSur Tri team a very laudable 1-2-3 finish in the category.
Joel Javier, the fifth member of the small but feisty team, finished fifth in the 30-39 age group.
Top honors in the 1st Tri King Long Distance triathlon went to Nonoy Jopson, conceded to be the number one triathlete in the country today who successfully defended his title against all domestic and foreign comers in the Men’s Professional, and to Sandra Araullo Gonzales, two-time Southeast Asian Games triathlon silver medalist, in the counterpart women’s division.
A latecomer in the multi-sport arena, the CamSur Tri Team was organized by Governor Villafuerte only last year just after the spectacular Ironman 70.3 Philippines held at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) of the Provincial Capitol here staged under a comprehensive program to transform the province not only into a world-class eco-tourism destination but also as a center of international extreme sports.
Team members were recruited from students and graduates of the CamSur Sports Academy (CSA), a DepEd accredited institution offering sports-focused elementary and secondary curricula, another sports development-related project of the governor which is the only such facility of its kind in the country wholly and solely operated by a local government unit.
Governor Villafuerte is optimistic the CamSur Tri Team will perform creditably well in the forthcoming second edition of the Ironman 70.3 Philippines again to be held at the CWC here August 22, 2010. (GBClaveria/MMEC)
