CamSur triathletes shine anew at Zambales multi-sportsfest
PILI, CamSur – Camarines Sur is not only turning out into a genuine center of national and international sports events but the province itself has also started turning out globally competitive athletes.
This was recently confirmed by the very creditable performance once again demonstrated by the CamSur Tri Team fielded by Governor LRay Villafuerte in the Zambales Multisports Festival held March 18 to 20 at Dawal Beach Resort.
The local athletes proved their mettle in the open multisports dubbed the Black Sands Triathlon against a field of over 500 athletes that included professional and even the daunted Philippine team competed March 20.
In the triathlon combining 1.5 kilometers of swimming, 50 kilometers of cycling and 12 kilometers run, Mark Anthony Hosana bagged the first place in the 19 year and below category while Philip Atento placed second among the 30 to 39 year olds.
Benjamin Raña captured third place, Mark Anthony Hosana the fifth place and Philip Atento sixth in overall standing, an amazing collective feat for such a small team to feature prominently in the races that included the participation of the country’s best triathletes.
Just last month the team lorded it over in all age categories joined in the Speedo National Age Group Tournament also held in Subic Bay in Zambales.
The triathlon is a relatively new sports event lately gaining popularity worldwide that is being keenly promoted in the Philippines by Governor Villafuerte himself in cooperation with Alaska Milk Corporation and Asia Brewery.
The cooperative efforts of the three entities won for Camarines Sur the hosting for three consecutive years of the Ironman 70.3 Philippines, the biggest triathlon event in Asia and a qualifying race for the world championships.
The burgeoning CamSur Tri Team which was organized by Governor Villafuerte in 2009 just after the very first Ironman 70.3 Philippines held in the world-famed CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) is expected to replicate its sterling performance during the staging of the third edition of the event come August.
